Fertilizing the ocean with iron could help reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, according to newly released findings of a research cruise. Why? In a word, diatoms.
A hunger for iron rules the microscopic sea life of the Southern Ocean surrounding ice-covered Antarctica. Cut off from most continental dirt and dust, the plankton, diatoms and other life that make up the broad bottom of the food chain there can't get enough iron to grow. And that's why some scientists think that artificially fertilizing such waters with the metal could promote blooms that suck CO2 out of the air. Then, when these microscopic creatures die, they would sink to the bottom of the ocean and take the carbon with them.
Such blooms occur naturally, of course, so the first part of the hypothesis is not controversial. What remained questionable until now is whether such blooms in fact sequestered much carbon or if it was being quickly recycled back into the atmosphere. The problem for scientists is that oceanic waters tend to mix, which makes monitoring and delineating an experiment in the ocean challenging.
The solution, devised by biological oceanographer Victor Smetacek of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Germany and his colleagues, was to use an eddy. Such swirling currents can be remarkably self-contained. In fact, the new research to be published in Nature on July 19 shows that less than 10 percent of the eddy's waters mixed with the surrounding ocean. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)
With such ideal conditions, the group dissolved seven metric tons of iron sulfate in acidic seawater and spewed the solution into the ship's propeller wash starting on February 13, 2004, covering a circular patch in the eddy of some 167 square kilometers. That's the equivalent of adding 0.01 gram of iron per square meter, levels similar to those found in the wake of a melting iceberg. They then monitored the fate of the patch off and on for five weeks, while also adding supplemental iron fertilizer after two weeks to keep concentrations high enough to promote growth.
As expected, microscopic sea life bloomed. Chaetoceros atlanticus, Corethron pennatum, Thalassiothrix antarcticus and nine other species of diatoms grew in abundance, boosting the amounts of chlorophyll, organic carbon and other signs of life in the waters to depths of as much as 100 meters beneath the surface.
By the middle of the third week after the researchers stopped adding iron, the bloom began to die. So many diatoms died, in fact, that they overwhelmed any natural systems for decay and fell in large numbers below 500 meters in depth. At least half of the total bloom biomass sank below 3,000 meters, according to the scientists' calculations. Fresh diatom cell corpses littered the seafloor as well, and the research team believes that much of the bloom ended at the bottom as a layer of fluff. "Since the aggregates sank so rapidly and the water column was more or less 'empty' on day 50, they must have settled out," Smetacek argues. "Layers of fluff have been reported from various regions, including the Southern Ocean."

Why did President Obama flub his 'Kiss Cam' moment?
President Obama failed to kiss his wife when a Kiss Cam focused on the First Couple Monday at a USA basketball exhibition in Washington. ? When the Kiss Cam turned its gaze on the couple a second time, the President gave Michelle Obama a big kiss.

He and First Lady Michelle Obama were attending a Team USA basketball exhibition game at the Verizon Center in Washington when the Kiss Cam turned its lens their way during a break in the action. The First Couple?s image appeared on the big arena screen, and the crowd began to cheer. That?s because when you show up on Kiss Cam, you?re supposed to plant a smooch on your partner.
But Obama clutched. He put his arm around Michelle, and smiled for the crowd, but that was it. Some in the crowd responded with boos.
Later in the game he got a second chance. That happens when you?re president. Imagine what went on behind the scenes ? perhaps a livid David Axelrod screamed at a Verizon Center official to try POTUS again or they?d learn the true meaning of ?outsourced job?.
Given a retry, Obama nailed his performance, giving Michelle a big spousal kiss on the lips, and one on her forehead for good measure. The crowd cheered. According to some accounts there were chants of ?four more years?, though at that point in the game it?s possible some group was just ordering ?four more beers?.
But here?s our question: why did he mess this up in the first place? We?ve got some theories:
IT WASN?T FOCUS-GROUPED.
In a presidential campaign virtually every word a candidate says is scripted. All actions are pre-studied and analyzed for possible effect on swing voters in Ohio. Last week on his bus tour through swing states Obama entered a Pennsylvania bakery and ordered an apple pie, for instance. You think that was an accident? We would be unsurprised to learn that the campaign team had held a meeting beforehand to consider his pastry choices and rejected German chocolate cake as too European.
In that context, Obama just didn?t know what to do when the time came for spontaneous action. Had Axelrod run this by a focus group? Do voters want a little passion in their Kiss Cam couples, or restraint? Best not to move until the Gallup poll data comes in.
WHAT?S A ?KISS CAM??
It?s also possible that Obama had no idea what was expected. We?re about the same era as POTUS, and we go out on the town about as much as he does, which is to say, seldom. We were at a sporting event over the weekend and were astonished by the range of between-action activities: Kiss Cams, Most Active Fan contests, mascot races and so forth. What happened to just watching the game? When did umpires get individualized walk-up music?
Presidents might be even more insulated in this regard than the rest of us. ?Wow, Michelle, look at how bright that screen is ? and now they?re showing us? Why are we appearing inside a heart-shaped graphic??
HUSBAND = CLUELESS.
A corollary of reason number two might be this: it?s possible that as a longtime married guy Barack Obama is not quick on the uptake when it comes to suggestions of spousal togetherness.
When you?ve been a husband as long as he has, candlelit dinners mean the power?s out. A weed whacker might seem a perfectly appropriate anniversary gift. You TiVo Stephen Colbert, because really, who can stay up that late?

OC Foodies, Surfas is Coming to SOCO! | Foodie In Disguise
Well it?s official. I reported last month that Surfas was making a move into Orange County and they have selected one of the best spots in The OC. The OC Weekly reports that Surfas will be moving into the South Coast Collection (SOCO) at Hyland and Sunflower!
This is awesome news! SOCO is also home to Portola Coffee, OC Cheeseshop, We Olive and Wine Bar, The Iron Press, Waiiha Sushi, N?Ice Cream, Christopher Garren?s Cakes and two new restaurants scheduled to open soon: ARC and a Raw Oyster Bar. SOCO is also home to the SOCO Farmers? Market which is held every Satruday from 9am to 2pm.
I first came upon Surfas when I was enrolled in the Professional Culinary program at The New School of Cooking in Culver City. Our school was a stone?s throw from Surfas and we did all of our shopping there for most of our supplies. Surfas is a kitchen wonderland with kitchenware, gourmet foods, cheeses, knives, oils and even a Caf?. They also sell restaurant equipment and fixtures. I have been shopping at Surfas since 2000.
In operation since 1937, Surfas has been owned by the same family bringing restaurant supplies and gourmet food to restaurant owners, culinary professionals and foodies here in Southern California. In addition to the thousands of items they carry in their large warehouse location in Culver City, they also offer services in restaurant deign and installation for commercial kitchens. In 2009 CulinaryDistrict.com was started to expand Surfas? online presence.

Now that they are coming to Costa Mesa, I won?t have to make the trek up to Culver City every month! They will be able to move in pretty quickly into their new space. Most of their goods are on Metro shelving and the space will need little tenant improvements. Also reported by OC Weekly, there are places for a Surfas Caf? as well. It?s unclear if they will have a teaching kitchen like their space up in Culver City.
This is a great addition to SOCO and I can?t wait. It?s too bad they have already hired all their staff. With my prior experience with Sur La Table, their culinary program and my operations background it would be a dream to work there.
